Who are Only Fair Clothing?
How Only Fair Clothing Began
We’ve got a confession to make. We’re not sustainability experts, nor do we make perfect eco-friendly choices all the time. We decided to create Only Fair Clothing because of these very reasons.
After Danny spent over a week umm-ing and ahh-ing over which brand of sustainable t-shirt to buy (he’s a chronic researcher and over-thinker), he realised a few key things. First, it was hard to know who to trust when it came to their sustainability claims if you’re not super educated on the topic. Nearly everyone’s website mentioned their eco and ethical practices. Second, there appeared to be only a handful of big sustainable brands who made it easy enough for the everyday human to understand how they were helping the environment.
He went down a rabbit hole of info before deciding it was all too hard and wondered if other people faced the same problem. Spoiler alert - they did!
We started off by asking our eco-conscious friends how they went about choosing clothes. Most of them knew they could trust the big players in the sustainable clothing market and defaulted to buying from them. But they often felt restricted in terms of choices and cost. Surely we shouldn’t have to spend hours researching sustainability practices just to buy a shirt!
So came our idea of creating a brand you know will make the best choices they can, and will continue to improve as more knowledge is gained. Since we aren’t sustainability gurus, we can explain in plain English why we’ve chosen the fabrics, inks and postage envelopes we have, without confusing the heck out of you.
The humans behind Only Fair Clothing
We, Danny and Tiff, live in Bristol, United Kingdom with our two cheeky beagles.
By day, Danny’s an engineering manager for a software company which encourages users to find joy in cooking and reduce food waste along the way. During his time there, he’s become increasingly aware of his environmental impact.
Tiff is an ex-mechanical engineer turned career coach for women in STEM (science, technology, engineering & maths). She’s always had the heart for helping people and animals which explains why she cares so much about making eco-friendly choices in everyday life.
Both of us share a desire to make this whole sustainability thing easier to navigate because we’ve both been bitten before. For example, Tiff spent ages researching sustainable sock brands Danny’s Christmas present last year. After all that hassle, she found a ranking website that proved the brand wasn’t actually doing much good for the environment at all!
While we can be partial to a plastic-wrapped Curly Wurly and often forget to refill our shampoo at our local bulk store, we try our best to make sustainable choices when we can. With our first baby on the way, it’s become personally important that we do what we can to protect this planet for future generations.
How we chose our company values
We wanted to make sure everything we did, whether that was choosing fabrics for t-shirts or words for Instagram posts, reflected the reasons we created Only Fair in the first place. The values of Mindful, Transparent and Give Back are at the heart of every decision we make.
We spent a lot of time finding the perfect facility to print our t-shirts. We didn’t stop until we landed on an independent studio that prints with water based, eco-friendly inks and is 100% powered by renewable energy.
We admit that we don’t know everything about saving the environment (I mean, who does!) but your feedback and suggestions are what helps us improve. Our website gives you all the information you need so you can be confident that your hard earned cash is going towards an ethical organisation.
Only Fair has also committed to offset all carbon emissions spent due to shipping our products to you. This means we calculate the carbon cost and compensate for it on your behalf by paying to fund sustainability initiatives.
These are just a few examples of how we live our values. Learn more about our three core values here.
Naming the brand
If you’ve ever had to choose a name for anything before, you’ll know how hard it can be! We agonised for weeks over hundreds of names. But when “Only Fair” appeared in front of us, it just felt right.
We will only ever produce clothing that’s made fairly - meaning fair trade fabrics and ethical working rights all the way down our supply chains. On top of that, as consumers, it’s Only Fair that we make sustainable choices. It’s all for the sake of our cotton farmers, garment makers and saving our beautiful planet from accelerated global warming and our precious future generations.
The name is also our promise to you. We want to treat you fairly by being transparent because you have the right to know the origins of your wardrobe.
What’s next for Only Fair Clothing?
We aren’t a massive clothing industry monster that wants to take over the world. Our goal is to only produce what our community wants in the volumes you demand. So our plan is pretty simple: to learn what you need and just offer that.
So we welcome you into our community by following us on Instagram or signing up to our newsletter at in the footer. By doing so, we’ll ask you what you’d like to see from us in the future so you can help shape what Only Fair becomes tomorrow.
